Step-by-step Guide
Do you have demerit points on your license that you need to remove? Here are the steps to get 3 demerit points off your Alberta drivers license with a Government approved online course:
1. Go to “Online Defensive Driving Course – 3 Demerit Reduction (Alberta Only)”
2. Press “Buy now”
3. Add it to your cart and check out. The cost is $99.95
4. Register & take the course. It will take about 6 hours to complete.
5. Once you have passed the course with 80% or higher, a government certificate will be mailed to you.
6. After the certificate has arrived, take it to your local registry.
Only Every Two Years
Each license holder can only use the demerit reduction program once every two years. If you try to use it more often than that, you will not be eligible to reduce the demerit points on your driver’s license.
Try This To Avoid Getting Demerits
Avoid speeding: Make a commitment to yourself that you will no longer speed. It will be uncomfortable at first, but rest assured that the feeling will go away over time. As a reminder, attach your speeding ticket to your visor where you will see it as you enter the car. Look at the ticket and say: “NOT TODAY.”
Don’t pile too many people into your car: Having more passengers in your car than seatbelts is a sure way to get a ticket and demerit points, not to mention that it’s incredibly dangerous. If you have too many passengers, consider hiring a taxi or Uber. Or, if you have to make multiple trips, make the drive more fun by picking some treats up at a drive-thru. Fun fact: drivers don’t have to pay for their cheeseburgers.
Stop for school buses: Always stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing. Remember, just like an intersection, flashing Amber lights means “use caution” and flashing red lights always means stop! You must stop 4-5 car lengths away from the bus, so other drivers behind you can see the lights and young pedestrians.
Stop fully at intersections and red lights: When you come to intersections and red lights, you must come to a complete stop – not a rolling stop. Rolling through a stop sign can get you a big ticket and three demerits on your license.
Pay attention to the defensive driving course: We hope that our 3 demerit reduction courses will help give you the tools to prevent future demerits on your license. It teaches the SAFER System of Defensive Driving. The SAFER System is behaviour-based, meaning it’s not just a list of items to memorize, but actually provides tools to help change your behaviours future-forward.
